Communication in Yoga
The intended and unintended consequences of the words we use.
In this workshop Bill and Annie will look at language and communication in the yoga sphere
This workshop looks at the nature of pain from a contemporary perspective. From a thorough understanding of the neuroscience of pain it then wanders through the history of posture and looks at research on how words are interpreted and what they can mean to a student and how they influence an individuals beliefs about their body.
Aimed at teachers, the goal of the workshop is to help teachers understand the impact of the words they use and how their communication with students can enhance or detract the students perception of themselves.
*It isn't just theory, the workshop also includes a practical class and an encouragement for discussion, as well as bad jokes being layered throughout.
Bill - Lecturer of Communication to RMIT Osteopathy students & President of Osteopathy Australia - will provide background on the impact of communication on people's perceptions of how their bodies work, analyse the nature of pain, placebo/nocebo and how language affects them.
Annie - A Community Psychologist (provisional) and yoga teacher will then facilitate a critical discussion on what this looks like in the yoga industry and explore how we could make yoga more accessible and beneficial through our language choices.
This workshop is suitable for anyone who works with bodies and is interested in the impact their language has on people.
