A conversation about what art can (and can’t) do in a colonised society.

This discussion will explore the role of art in communities and whether it has the capacity to change systems, structures and colonised worldviews.

Todd Fernando is a descendant of the Wiradjuri peoples and a PhD candidate specialising in medical anthropology with the Centre for Health Equity at the University of Melbourne. His academic interest is in Indigenous queer theory, health policy, racial literacy, whiteness studies, and Indigenous global politics. 

Neika Lehman lives in Narrm, working as an artist, writer and educator. She is current co-editor of un Magazine alongside Maddee Clark. Neika grew up on muwinina country and descends from the trawlwoolway peoples of North-East Tasmania. 

Maddee Clark is a Yugambeh freelance writer, curator and educator living in Narrm. Maddee’s work has appeared in Overland, Next Wave Festival, NITV, Artlink, and the collection Colouring the Rainbow: Black Queer and Trans Perspectives.

The panellists will discuss these ideas and questions in relation to their own work as artists, curators, educators and writers.
